I'm sure you'll notice if you stop by on a regular basis that I have not included any of the 'campaign comments' that Mr. Olbermann did in the last week or so. It has not been an oversight; I didn't think that they were appropriate to add to this site.

With the election of Barack Obama as our 44th President, I can foresee less of a need for this site. Do I think that Mr. Olbermann will somehow go easier on a Democratic administration? Hardly! Do I think that the Obama Administration will be perfect? Again, Hardly. I think that the kind of epic screw-ups that have hallmarked the Bush administration will be few and far between now. That being said, I have no intention of removing this blog.

And now, onward and upward. The fight has just begun!

You have by now heard the remark — instantly added to our through-the-looking glass lexicon of the 21st Century, a time when we suddenly started referring to this country as “the homeland” as if anybody here has used that term since Charles Lindbergh or the German-American Bund in 1940.

Which, he took pains to emphasize, was based on no specific nor even vague intelligence — that we are entering a period of increased risk of terrorism here.

He got as specific as saying that Al-Qaeda seems to like the summer, but as to the rest of it, he is perfectly content to let us sit and wait and worry - and to contemplate his gut.

NEW YORK, May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies(AAN) announced today that MSNBC news anchor Keith Olbermann is the winner of its first annual Molly Ivins Award. Olbermann's achievement will be recognized in a ceremony to be held this afternoon in New York City.

Finally tonight, a Special Comment about Rudolf Giuliani's remarks at a Lincoln Day Dinner in New Hampshire last night.

Since some indeterminable hour between the final dousing of the pyre at The World Trade Center, and the breaking of what Senator Obama has aptly termed "9/11 Fever," it has been profoundly and disturbingly evident that we are at the center of one of history's great ironies.

Only in this America of the early 21st Century could it be true, that the man who was president during the worst attack on our nation, and the man who was the mayor of the city in which that attack principally unfolded, would not only be absolved of any and all blame for the unreadiness of their own governments, but, more over, would thereafter be branded heroes of those attacks.

And now, that Mayor - whose most profound municipal act in the wake of that nightmare was to suggest the postponement of the election to select his own successor - has gone even a step beyond these M.C. Escher constructions of history.

His right pointer. Eighty words a minute. We saw.

"I taught myself at 8," he says. "Every time I try to learn real typing, I get a little confused. I usually charge admission for people to see me."

MSNBC doesn't pay its liberal provocateur to type. It pays him because, almost single-handedly, he's made the once-foundering network a serious player in the cable wars.

Last night on Countdown, 4 of the 12 'Special Comments' were re-aired. I'm not sure what the criterion was to be chosen for the show, but some of Keith's best work was displayed.
In order they were:
1.) September 11, 2006. Live from Ground Zero. From the transcript:

And lastly tonight a Special Comment on why we are here. Half a lifetime ago, I worked in this now-empty space.
And for 40 days after the attacks, I worked here again, trying to make sense of what happened, and was yet to happen, as a reporter.
And all the time, I knew that the very air I breathed contained the remains of thousands of people, including four of my friends, two in the planes and — as I discovered from those "missing posters" seared still into my soul — two more in the Towers.
And I knew too, that this was the pyre for hundreds of New York policemen and firemen, of whom my family can claim half a dozen or more, as our ancestors.
I belabor this to emphasize that, for me… this was, and is, and always shall be, personal.
And anyone who claims that I and others like me are "soft", or have "forgotten" the lessons of what happened here — is at best a grasping, opportunistic, dilettante — and at worst, an idiot — whether he is a commentator, or a Vice President, or a President.

2.) August 30, 2006 On Rumsfeld:

The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack.
Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet.

Mr. Rumsfeld’s remarkable speech to the American Legion yesterday. It demands the deep analysis - and the sober contemplation - of every American.

For it did not merely serve to impugn the morality or intelligence - indeed, the loyalty - of the majority of Americans who oppose the transient occupants of the highest offices in the land; Worse, still, it credits those same transient occupants - our employees - with a total omniscience; a total omniscience which neither common sense, nor this administration’s track record at home or abroad, suggests they deserve.

3.)October 5, 2006 On Bush's lies, and the scapegoating of Democrats:

And lastly tonight, a Special Comment, about — lying. While the leadership in Congress has self-destructed over the revelations of an unmatched, and unrelieved, march through a cesspool… While the leadership inside the White House has self-destructed over the revelations of a book with a glowing red cover…

4.) November 6, 2006 'Making it up as you go along, sir' Pre-election comment:

And finally tonight, a Special Comment about tomorrow's elections.

We are, as every generation, inseparable from our own time.

Thus is our perspective, inevitably that of the explorer looking into the wrong end of the telescope.

But even accounting for our myopia, it's hard to imagine there have been many elections more important than this one, certainly not in Non-Presidential years.

And so we look at the verdict in the trial of Saddam Hussein yesterday, and, with the very phrase "October, or November, Surprise" now a part of our vernacular, and the chest-thumping coming from so many of the Republican campaigners today, each of us must wonder about the convenience of the timing of his conviction and sentencing.

But let us give history and coincidence the benefit of the doubt — let's say it's just "happened" that way — and for a moment not look into the wrong end of the telescope.

Let's perceive instead the bigger picture:

Saddam Hussein, found guilty in an Iraqi court.

Who can argue against that?

He is officially, what the world always knew he was: a war criminal.

Mr. Bush, was this imprimatur, worth the cost of 2,832 American lives, and thousands more American lives yet to be lost?

Is the conviction of Saddam Hussein the reason you went to war in Iraq?

It seems to me that every one of his Special Comments was more powerful than the one before; Could these be the best of the best? Would you have picked the same ones? I profess a fondness for his comment on Clinton versus Fox New's Chris Wallace; but I don't think it's necessarily his best.

MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann can do sarcasm -- tinged with rage -- very effectively. He does it, in fact, every night on his cable channel's top-rated show, "Countdown," where he systematically eviscerates President George W. Bush, his policies, and assorted members of America's conservative political establishment.

"Apologize, sir!" Mr. Olbermann barked on Sept. 25, after the president said it was "unacceptable to think" one could compare U.S. behavior in Iraq with that of Islamic extremists.

Such presidential cautions against free thinking take us, Olbermann thundered, "toward a new and fearful path -- one heretofore the realm of science fiction authors and apocalyptic visionaries."

If you picked up the New York Times on October 18, you'd have had little reason to think it was a particularly significant day in American history. While the front page featured a photo of George W. Bush signing a new law at the White House the previous day, the story about the Military Commissions Act--which the Times never named--was buried in a 750-word piece on page A20. "It is a rare occasion when a President can sign a bill he knows will save American lives" was the first of several quotes of praise from the President that were high up in the article. Further down, a few Democrats objected to the bill, but from the article's limited explanation of the law it was hard to understand why.

But if you happened to catch MSNBC the evening before, you'd have heard a different story. It, too, began with a laudatory statement from the President: "These military commissions are lawful. They are fair. And they are necessary." Cut to MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann: "And they also permit the detention of any American in jail without trial if the President does not like him." ...... MSNBC general manager Dan Abrams' memo to staffers about November ratings:

You did it again! Congratulations to everyone on another blockbuster month for the newly energized and surging MSNBC! For the total day we were up a whopping 44% in the key demographic and 25% with total viewers compared with November 05. Competitively, this was our best month since February 02! In prime time, we were up more than any other cable news network: up 70% in the demo, and 47% among total viewers. That earned us our best competitive position in prime time since November 01 and made us the 2nd fastest growing channel on all of cable. And once again, Countdown beat CNN for the month in the key demographic.

We also got off to a great start for the month of December (those ratings began Monday). In prime time on Monday, we beat CNN by 29% in the key demographic. In fact, for 11 hours on Monday we bested CNN and beat Fox for three hours.

Its official, we are on a roll.

SECAUCUS, N.J. — The Democrats may have wrested back control of power in Congress, but that hasn't quieted the ire of Keith Olbermann.

Last week, he delivered one of his trademark blistering critiques of the country's leadership — this time charging that President Bush failed to learn the lessons of Vietnam by perpetuating the "monumental lie that is our presence in Iraq." And don't think the victors of the midterm election are going to escape his sharp tongue.

If there's one person in the media/political swamp in Washington D.C. that needs to get out of the beltway, it's Howie. Consider this article he wrote yesterday for the Post : The Junkies Network.

Mr. Kurtz gives a run down on why MSNBC's rating are improving, but as usual Howie misses the mark. In this case he didn't even hit the target. From reading the article one would assume that viewers are tuning in to see Andrea Mitchell grappling with a complete sentence live on the air. Or the appearances of Brian Williams and the other stars from the mother ship. All of these developments have happened this fall in the run-up to the elections, and in Howie's mind that's surely the reason that the ratings at the #3 cabal news network have started to rise. Only in the 11th paragraph does he get to the real reason the network's fortunes have improved, and this is how it's introduced :

Some of the election coverage was anchored by Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, and Keith Olbermann, whose show "Countdown" has become a nightly feast of Bush-bashing.

Nice huh ?

The one person who has moved the numbers for the whole network gets billing under Joe Scarborough. To read Kurtz it's the other folks that are carrying poor Keith on their backs. Mr. Kurtz continues :

His program could become a model for the newscast of the future," Abrams says. "It's a mix of straight news reporting with lighter fare and occasionally with some opinion."

Some opinion? Not only does Olbermann steer clear of conservative guests, he has added an occasional "special comment" segment in which he recently urged President Bush to apologize to American troops for starting and mishandling the war, going on to suggest "you are not honest" and "you are far more stupid than the worst of your critics has suggested."

See ... in Howie's world Bush hasn't made any mistakes, and if we'd all just swallow what's being spooned out to us .... everything would be just peachy. In Howie's world the model of "Balance" rules. The right-wing pit bull and the liberal straw man. The truth and a lie. In Howies world this is the model the news should follow.

Why ?

Cause Fox said it should.

But, back to Howie's big miss in his piece. The numbers have been on the move at MSNBC for some time now. Want to follow along ? Bookmark these guys : TV Newser
The numbers began to spike after Keith delivered his Aug. 30th Special Comment. To read Kurtz they are just a mere curiosity and not worth looking at. But on the other coast and away from D.C. ..... CW Nevius writing in the San Franciso Cronicle wrote :

See, Kurtz can't write about the central figure in MSNBC's turn around, that would give credit where it's due. Just like Howard Dean didn't have anything to do with all those governors and state houses moving into the Democratic column on Nov. 7th.
Because as others have said before, Washington isn't the seat of our national government, it's an 8th grade student council meeting ..... And the popular kids just aren't going to let anybody into the "click".

Keith Olbermann says virtually all of his colleagues at MSNBC have been supportive of his special comments, with "a lot of correspondents saying 'I wish I could say that too.'"

The Countdown host participated in a comments thread at Firedoglake yesterday, and he said management gives him "no crap" about the special comments. "The only thing they ask for is more of them," he says. "I point out I can't supply these on demand. They're organic; otherwise I'm Limbaugh without the hallucinogens."

He also described how he comes up with the special comments:

A) Get pissed off.

B) Hear the 'Special Comment' bell go off in my head.

C) Write it

D) Rewrite it

E) Re-rewrite it in the morning

F) Do it aloud three or four times

G) Get the rest of the show done

H) Do it with the knowledge it has to be done by exactly 9:00:00 ET.

According to MSNBC, an editorial to be published on Monday in the Military Times is said to call for the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld. The voice of military community saying Rumsfeld must go is huge, and may swing Conservative votes.

The Military Times provides publications for the 4 main branches of the military - The Army Times, Navy Times, Marine Times, and the Marine Corp. Times, which is the favored reading of troops overseas, on military bases, and the military families who traditional vote conservatively.

Op-Ed Columnist Insulting Our Troops, and Our Intelligence

George Bush, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld think you’re stupid. Yes, they do.

They think they can take a mangled quip about President Bush and Iraq by John Kerry — a man who is not even running for office but who, unlike Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, never ran away from combat service — and get you to vote against all Democrats in this election.

Every time you hear Mr. Bush or Mr. Cheney lash out against Mr. Kerry, I hope you will say to yourself, “They must think I’m stupid.” Because they surely do.

They think that they can get you to overlook all of the Bush team’s real and deadly insults to the U.S. military over the past six years by hyping and exaggerating Mr. Kerry’s mangled gibe at the president.

What could possibly be more injurious and insulting to the U.S. military than to send it into combat in Iraq without enough men — to launch an invasion of a foreign country not by the Powell Doctrine of overwhelming force, but by the Rumsfeld Doctrine of just enough troops to lose? What could be a bigger insult than that?

What could possibly be more injurious and insulting to our men and women in uniform than sending them off to war without the proper equipment, so that some soldiers in the field were left to buy their own body armor and to retrofit their own jeeps with scrap metal so that roadside bombs in Iraq would only maim them for life and not kill them? And what could be more injurious and insulting than Don Rumsfeld’s response to criticism that he sent our troops off in haste and unprepared: Hey, you go to war with the army you’ve got — get over it.

What could possibly be more injurious and insulting to our men and women in uniform than to send them off to war in Iraq without any coherent postwar plan for political reconstruction there, so that the U.S. military has had to assume not only security responsibilities for all of Iraq but the political rebuilding as well? The Bush team has created a veritable library of military histories — from “Cobra II” to “Fiasco” to “State of Denial” — all of which contain the same damning conclusion offered by the very soldiers and officers who fought this war: This administration never had a plan for the morning after, and we’ve been making it up — and paying the price — ever since.

And what could possibly be more injurious and insulting to our men and women in Iraq than to send them off to war and then go out and finance the very people they’re fighting against with our gluttonous consumption of oil? Sure, George Bush told us we’re addicted to oil, but he has not done one single significant thing — demanded higher mileage standards from Detroit, imposed a gasoline tax or even used the bully pulpit of the White House to drive conservation — to end that addiction. So we continue to finance the U.S. military with our tax dollars, while we finance Iran, Syria, Wahhabi mosques and Al Qaeda madrassas with our energy purchases.

Everyone says that Karl Rove is a genius. Yeah, right. So are cigarette companies. They get you to buy cigarettes even though we know they cause cancer. That is the kind of genius Karl Rove is. He is not a man who has designed a strategy to reunite our country around an agenda of renewal for the 21st century — to bring out the best in us. His “genius” is taking some irrelevant aside by John Kerry and twisting it to bring out the worst in us, so you will ignore the mess that the Bush team has visited on this country.

And Karl Rove has succeeded at that in the past because he was sure that he could sell just enough Bush cigarettes, even though people knew they caused cancer. Please, please, for our country’s health, prove him wrong this time.

Let Karl know that you’re not stupid. Let him know that you know that the most patriotic thing to do in this election is to vote against an administration that has — through sheer incompetence — brought us to a point in Iraq that was not inevitable but is now unwinnable.

Let Karl know that you think this is a critical election, because you know as a citizen that if the Bush team can behave with the level of deadly incompetence it has exhibited in Iraq — and then get away with it by holding on to the House and the Senate — it means our country has become a banana republic. It means our democracy is in tatters because it is so gerrymandered, so polluted by money, and so divided by professional political hacks that we can no longer hold the ruling party to account.

It means we’re as stupid as Karl thinks we are.

I, for one, don’t think we’re that stupid. Next Tuesday we’ll see.
