Benjamin Franklin, in his address on the final day of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, uttered this warning : This [Constitution] is likely to be administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other. Writ of habeas corpus - court order which requires that individuals who have been arrested or detained be physically brought before the court to determine whether they are being held on legal grounds. This helps protect people from being arbitrary arrested and/or held in custody for excessive periods unnecessarily. "Habeas corpus" means "you must have the body."
